STUDIO 28 Clarens

Clarens is situated in the Eastern Free State Mountains. Clarens is also known as the “Jewel of the Free State”.

At an altitude of 1850m, it is the highest village in the Free State and the 3rd highest in South Africa.

Clarens was founded in 1912 and has just celebrated its first Centenary. It became the 1st Proudly South African village in South Africa, in 2006.

A beautiful village, surrounded by sandstone cliffs and majestic mountains, Clarens is an inspiration to our resident artists and has become a real Art Mecca over the years. It is home to more than 35 Art Galleries and many unique shops.

Mount Horeb, Setlofe in Sotho, looks over Clarens from its 2449m high. It is believed that when Horeb-Setlofe is covered in clouds it will soon rain in our little village.

Clarens has a temperate climate in summer with temperatures rarely over 30 degrees C, thunderstorms and showers, a lovely autumn that paints the trees in golden shades, and cold dry winters. Although it sometimes snows in the village, the surrounding mountains are often dusted with white. Each season has its pleasures making Clarens the perfect year round destination.

The Golden Gate National Park, established in 1963, is only 18km away. The 11 634 hectares are now a game park where many species of antelopes can be found (eland, blesbok, hartebees, springbok, amongst others). A drive to the golden sandstone cliffs is a must!

The road between Clarens and Fouriesburg (only 35km away) is probably one of the most scenic routes in South Africa.

Another point of interest is the Ash River outfall (8km on the Bethlehem road), which is part of the Lesotho Highlands Water Project. The water comes out of an 87km tunnel from Katse Dam in Lesotho. With year-long high water, the Ash River is ideal for White water rafting and fly-fishing.

Afri-Ski, the only ski resort in Lesotho, is only 90km away. Passports are compulsory to cross the border at Caledonspoort border post close to Fouriesburg. Lesotho, the Mountain Kingdom offers amazing scenery and can be enjoyed at all seasons.

Whether you are looking for an adrenaline rush or simply for a relaxed break, Clarens has something for you.
